What is Manscaping: Professional Grooming Tips for Men

As a man, it's easy to simply let things grow. However, not only does this make you look unkempt but it can be a big turn-off for the ladies.

To make sure that you're grooming the right way, you'll want to implement a few manscaping tips. "What is manscaping," you ask? Keep reading and let's find out!

What is Manscaping?

Before we jump into all the best ways to manscape, let's talk about what it actually is. Manscaping simply means removing extra body hair. A few areas where you can manscape include:

  • Your back
  • Arms
  • Chest
  • Pubes
  • Legs
  • Ears
  • Nose
  • Eyebrows

You can do some DIY manscaping using a razor or a trimmer at home. Or, if you prefer, you can head to a professional salon and get laser hair removal or waxing services.

Remember, you don't have to manscape if you don't want to. Some people choose to embrace their body hair. However, manscaping is a way of improving your personal hygiene and keeping your body free of bacteria and dirt.

When you have too much body hair, the hairs can trap bacteria and can lead to poor body odor or even infection. That's why shaving, at least a little bit, is such an important decision.

One of the most important things to know about manscaping is that you don't need to get rid of everything. While you're certainly welcome to, you can also choose to simply trim things to keep them tidy and hygienic.

How Do I Manscape?

Now that you know what manscaping is, let's talk about how you can actually do it. Here are a few common areas that you might want to manscape and what you can do to keep them in good, well-kept condition.

Eyebrows

The eyebrows are a major defining feature on your face, and as such, they should be regularly groomed. To do so, you'll want to focus on reducing heaviness and removing stray hairs.

However, when grooming your eyebrows it's important not to go overboard. A good manscaping job on your eyebrows should result in a tidy, youthful look.

To manscape your eyebrows, you'll want to start by using a pair of grooming scissors to trim away any super long airs. From there, use a pair of tweezers to tidy up hairs that are growing outside your eyebrow's natural shape.

Ears

When you're younger, ear hair may not pose a problem. However, as you age, ear hair tends to grow more quickly and to grow much thicker, too.

The good news is that it's easy to get rid of ear hair. We recommend using an electric trimmer to help you quickly get rid of ear hair and prevent it from growing back.

Or, you can simply use a pair of tweezers to remove longer hairs around the outer ear. Then, trim the inner part of the ear using facial grooming scissors to get rid of visible hairs.

Nose

If you notice nose hairs poking out of your nostrils, it's definitely time to pull out the scissors and whip things into shape. Notice how we said scissors; using tweezers on your nose hairs can lead to small tears in the nostrils.

When these tears occur in the nose, your nose begins to bleed. This, in turn, can allow bacteria to build up and can cause an infection.

To prevent that from happening, use grooming scissors to get rid of extra hairs in the nostrils. Or, invest in an electric trimmer to help you get rid of lengthy nose hairs without harming your nostrils.

Chest

The chest is one of the most popular places for grooming. And, if you plan on shaving your chest, you'll need to choose a manscaping style.

Most men like a neatly trimmed look. However, you can also opt for a completely bare-chested appearance. The choice is up to you!

Whichever you choose, you'll need to start by getting an electric trimmer and selecting the guard. If you want a cleaner look, we recommend shaving cream and a manual razor to help you really get a close shave that scrapes off all those hairs.

Back

Another area that many men like to keep well-groomed is the back. One of the easiest methods for removing back hair is to use a back shaver specifically designed to be used by yourself.

Another way to get rid of back hair is to wax the area completely. If you choose to wax your back, make sure to get it taken care of by a professional.

If shaving your own back seems too complicated, you can also choose to use a men's hair removal cream. To use this type of cream, simply apply the ointment to your back and allow it to sit for five to ten minutes. Then, jump in the shower and wash off the cream and excess hair!

Armpits

It's easy for your armpits to get out of hand. And, while a little armpit hair is fine, having unruly pits is not a good look for a man.

If your armpits are starting to look a little wild, you might want to think about manscaping the area. You can do this by trimming the hair to a slightly shorter length.

Unless you're wanting to get rid of all the armpit hair, we recommend using an electric body groomer. Use it on a #2 guard and trim all the hair on your pits.

Arms and Legs

While many men, even those who manscape, allow their leg and arm air to grow freely, you can always choose to shave them if you'd like. If you want to get rid of leg hair or arm hair, you can use a few different options.

If you're wanting a natural look on your arms and legs, an electric trimmer works well. Set the trimmer to a #1 or a #2 guard to get the best results.

Or, if you're wanting totally smooth results, you can use a disposable razor. Alternatively, you can visit a professional to get your arms and legs waxed.

The Manhood

One of the main places people choose to manscape is below the belt. To do this correctly, you'll need to know what you're doing in each part of the area.

For one, it's important to have a well-trimmed bush. To get a clean shave in this area, pull the skin around your bush and your upper legs taught. From there, use a body groomer to trim the hair.

Next, it's time to move on to the balls. For this area, you'll need to apply a generous amount of shaving cream to the area. Then, use a wet razor to carefully tidy up the area.

Some men like to shave the hair around the base of the shaft. If this is you, we recommend using the same technique that you used to shave your balls. Just make sure you don't trim too close to the rest of your bush.

Finally, it's time to groom underneath and behind the penis. For this type of grooming, we recommend visiting a professional and getting a good waxing job. Even though it's uncomfortable in the moment, it will leave you with silky smooth results.

Alternatively, you can get a laser hair removal treatment. This option is permanent but can be pretty costly, so make sure to weigh the pros and cons before rushing out to get this done.

Manscaping Tips

Now that you know how to manscape just about every part of the body, let's take a look at some tips to help you get the job done right. These tips will make it easy for you to get rid of excess hair safely and successfully.

Choose Your Technique Wisely

You might think that you can simply choose whatever method you want when it comes o body hair removal. However, it's important to know which method works best on which area.

The reason for this is that if you don't use a safe method on each area of the body, you can wind up with in-grown hairs or cuts. Or, you can end up removing more hair than you meant to and getting a very different look than what you were going for.

Don't Use the Same Razor

This tip might sound obvious, but it's one that many men seem to forget about. When shaving your body, you should always use separate razors on the face and on the rest of the body.

This is especially true when it comes to shaving down there. You'll also want to make sure that your razors don't have rust, dirt, or dry dust built up in them.

Both reusing facial razors and not cleaning your razor can lead to infection. Good hygiene calls for new razors, making it an important step in manscaping.

Follow the Direction of the Hair Growth

When trimming or shaving your body, it always feels most natural to go against the hair's growth. However, when you're working on sensitive areas, it's better to follow the direction of the hair growth.

The reason for this is that it makes it less likely that you'll cut the skin or wind up with abrasions. Plus, make sure that you use light, gentle strokes, especially on more sensitive parts of the body.

The Shower Is Your Friend

Before you get down to business and start manscaping, take a shower in warm water. This helps flush the body of any bacteria or dirt and helps reduce the risk of getting an infection.

On top of that, it softens the hair and makes it easier to get rid of. Alternatively, you can manscape your body while you're taking a shower and make it part of your daily routine.

Apply Conditioner

If you've got tough hairs that are hard to get rid of, applying conditioner to the area can work wonders. Simply apply the conditioner to the problem patch and allow it to sit for five seconds before you begin shaving.

The reason this works? The conditioner helps to soften your hair. It also prevents you from getting itchy and irritated while removing the hair.

Pre-Trim

We know that patience isn't always easy, but when it comes to shaving, it's necessary. Before you jump right into manscaping, make sure that you trim the area first.

Doing so helps shorten the hairs so that you wind up with a smoother finish. Plus, it helps prevent pulling which can lead to irritation.

Make Use of Moisturizer or After Shave

After-shave exists for a reason. Once you're done shaving an area, make sure to pat the skin dry. Then, apply after-shave to the skin to help cool it down and nourish the area.

You can also use moisturizer to help do this. Either way, the point of this step is to stop bacteria from building up and to keep your skin clean.
